Weight Watchers is a diet program with millions of members in over 30 different countries around the world.

It was founded by Jean Nidetch, a Brooklyn homemaker, in 1963. Nidetch and a group of friends in Queens, NY, started meeting once a week to talk about how to lose weight.

Today, Weight Watchers is an international company and the largest commercial weight loss program in the United States (U.S.). Approved by many physicians, it is available in various settings, from the local community to the workplace and online.

The program includes regular meetings, self-help type learning sessions, group support, and a points system. The dieter aims for a target weight or a body mass index (BMI) of between 20 and 25, considered the ideal range.

Weight Watchers dieters are not restricted to specific foods or activities. Instead, they use a point system to monitor themselves on a daily basis. This makes them accountable for their weight loss activities each day. Members can record smart points on their mobile device.

The point system helps people lose weight over the long term.

Points depend on fat, sugar, and protein. The higher the protein content, the lower the points gained. The higher the fat and sugar content, the more points that food has, and the less you can eat.

The points encourage members to change their dietary habits, to eat more fruit, vegetable, and lean protein, and less fatty, sugary food.

Here is an example:

• an egg is worth 2 points
• two tablespoons of low-fat cheddar cheese are worth 1 point
• chopped tomatoes, onion and fresh herbs are worth 0 points
• one tablespoon of olive oil is worth 1 point

A person who eats a 2-egg cheese omelet fried with olive oil and sprinkled with tomato, onion and herbs uses up 4 points. If their target for the day is 30 points, they now have 26 points left.

A person will aim to achieve within a certain range of points, depending on how heavy they are and how much weight they need to lose.

A person who weighs 150 pounds, for example, will aim to gain 18 to 23 points a day. Someone who weighs over 350 pounds may aim to collect between 32 and 37 points in a day.

Members also can gain "Fit points" for activities such as cleaning, walking, or gardening.

An etool can be used to record the points digitally.

Each person has their own daily and weekly target points to meet in their own way, but within the limits agreed.

Members who keep within a certain weight range during the Maintenance period do not pay to attend meetings.

After an initial weight loss period, members can reach their target weight. At this point, they enter a maintenance period. Their daily allowance increases by 6 points, but they continue to track their food intake and activity levels.

For 6 weeks, they gradually increase their food intake until they are neither losing nor gaining weight.

During these 6 weeks, there are regular weigh-ins. If a member manages to stay within 2 pounds, or 0.91 kg of their target weight during the 6-week period, they then become a "Lifetime Member."

Lifetime Members can attend any Weight Watchers meeting free of charge as long as they weigh in once every month, and do not stray from their target weight by more than 2 pounds or 0.91 kg.

Lifetime members who drift from their weight target range have to pay weekly for meetings. They can then recover their Lifetime membership by going through the process again.

Findings published in The Lancet in 2011 suggested that patients who were referred by their doctors to Weight Watchers lost about twice as much weight as those on standard weight loss care over a 12-month period.

The researchers concluded:

"Referral by a primary health-care professional to a commercial weight loss programme that provides regular weighing, advice about diet and physical activity, motivation, and group support can offer a clinically useful early intervention for weight management in overweight and obese people that can be delivered at large scale."

Another study, published in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine, found that adults who attended at least 2 in every 3 Weight Watchers sessions for 6-months significantly reduced their fasting glucose and insulin levels, as well as losing weight.

In 2011, researchers described Weight Watchers as a "useful first line weight loss intervention" for the United Kingdom's National Health Service (NHS) to refer patients to if they needed and wanted to lose weight.

A review of 45 studies, published in 2015 in Annals of Internal Medicine, suggests that Weight Watchers may be a suitable program for physicians to recommend to patients who wish to lose weight.

Anyone who is considering a radical change to their diet should discuss plans with their physician first.

Dieters can either join a Weight Watchers program online or in person, and they can opt for meetings only, or they can add an online option, individual coaching, or both. Attending meetings is recommended.

How do you recommend that this table is cleaned? And is there a protectant that we can apply to the wood to help from water stains etc.?

When Donald Webber and Rebecca Covington  Webber first reached out about working together, I did a double take. Perhaps you've heard of of a little show called Hamilton…

Since it's premiere in 2013, Hamilton has been wowing audiences week after week. Donald was part of the initial ensemble, understudy to Lin-Manuel Miranda, playing the role of Alexander Hamilton. Wife Rebecca Covington Webber joined the cast prior to the Hamilton tour kicking off in Puerto Rico.

The couple closed out 2018 in San Juan, Puerto Rico as part of the show's hurricane relief efforts post Hurricane Maria. Now, Donald and Rebecca are on the third U.S. national tour of the production, gracing audiences with their talent and charisma.

These two incredible Broadway stars couldn't have been lovelier to work with, starting from day one. Donald shared a story of finding us on Instagram, immediately jiving with our aesthetic.

"It was important that we find a home that was really us," says Donald, "We're big energy people, and there was something about the energy of everything on House of Funk's page…we said, this is it."

A few short calls later and they were rolling with our online interior design service.

Their goals were clear from the get-go: Make it feel like a "nest" for newlyweds, create a calm place to decompress between their packed schedule of performances and tours, and have the space reflect their personal style and interests.

One of my biggest goals: To reconfigure the layout of the room to create a foyer in an open floor plan.

Interior design in a cozy colonial

My process always start with how my clients want to feel in their completed space, and it was evident that this couple wanted to feel the love. Right away, that word conjured up layers of soft, plush textures, creamy neutrals, and cozy pieces made for lounging.

Their other requests: a room they would be proud of, a room that feels relaxed, thoughtful, purposeful, inspired, and warm.

Rebecca and Donald want people to get an automatic energy and vibe when they walk into their foyer and living room. They were looking to elevate the space, to deliver that WOW factor.

Needless to say, I couldn't wait to dig in.

The layout

The home is a great side-hall Colonial with a little front porch, but the way the door is positioned, you come in and sort of fall right into the living room/family room/foyer. You're right in their cozy space.

Because they work crazy hours, the Webbers come home late, need to unwind, and end up falling asleep on the sofa. It is an extremely private space. But a structural renovation was out of the question…

So I fudged the look with a reconfigured layout. 😉

I wanted to create a sense of entry so we flipped the room and added a console, turned the stairwell landing into a teeny-tiny foyer and relocated anything that has to do with their personal stuff to the back door. Voila, a foyer in an open floor plan.

A clean color scheme

Their walls were already painted and I knew they wanted to keep their existing, sofa, so I ran with the neutral palette, adding in pops of metallic and blues to bring personality to the space.

The idea with online design is that the client has the initial investment in the design and that gives them a road map that allows them to execute it over time.

I layered shades of gray and creamy neutrals into the space, mixing in brass accessories for a dose of warmth.

Furnishings that make the love go round

Pleated grey ottomans from CB2 are whimsical, but totally practical…the ideal place for kicking up your feet at the end of a long day. The media console from Arhaus was a big-ticket item, and is a great way to keep electronics out of sight when company comes over. We left plenty of room on the TV unit shelves for the couple to display books and pictures, while giving them unique accessories to elevate the display space.

A brass "love" accessory from West Elm keeps the warm, cozy vibes going throughout the space – a nice, daily reminder for the couple.

Says Rebecca of their living room: "The living room is more of a family room, watch TV room, relaxing room, and where we fall asleep many nights — it's a multipurpose room. We want to create a space where people feel that they're loved. Sandra made our living room feel extraordinary. Her online design service was a dream — so easy, so accessible, and so fun. She listened to everything we desired and exceeded our expectations!"

A roomy armchair in the living room offers ample space for cozying up together and relaxing. I flanked it with a great little side table for setting down a drink, book, device, or, in this couple's case…a script.

The foyer gets a dose of color thanks to fresh greenery. The snake plant is an instant natural air purifier. Ella the bulldog is a fan, curling up near it for a nap when the sunlight hits that spot just so…

A wishbone chair paired with a shaggy throw = mid-Century modern boho. A graphic full-length mirror looks excellent near the crisp collection of black and white prints. Speaking of those prints…

A gallery wall that tells their story

The Webbers were instantly sold on the gallery wall we proposed.

By swapping in more personalized images of the two of them and things that spoke directly to the things they love, they were able to weave in more of their story. An authentic home should reflect the homeowner's personality and aesthetic, as well as tell the story of who they are and what the space represents for them.

We love that it can say so much about who we are and things that we love!

"We learned a lot about working as a team," says Rebecca of installing the gallery wall together. As new homeowners, the online interior design service taught us that we can do more than we thought we could. We took a lot of pride in taking it step by step on our own."

The Design Pack

Our online design pack includes a floor plan, elevations, inspiration images, and a customized shopping list. Examples of the design pack are shown below, all of which were compiled into a convenient and easy shopping list, from which the Webbers directly purchased products.

Detailed directions enable the client to execute great design on their own, at the pace that works for them.

We don't skimp on our online design service, taking it all the way down to the hooks in the little basket. We deliver everything via Wecora and the client can click right through and buy those items or take them as inspiration and shop. We give them exact links and show their scale in CAD and show the resources they can use.

For this Broadway couple, we wanted to blend their city-meets-burbs aesthetic all while encompassing their incredible energy and bold love for one another.

Is your home the perfect sanctuary for your pet? Latest figures estimate that 12 million households (44 per cent) in the UK have pets, according to the Pet Food Manufacturers' Association's Pet Population report .

The pet population currently stands at around 54 million, and of this, 27 per cent of households have dogs and 17 per cent have cats, but have you created a harmonious living space that your pet will love and equally feel at home in?

If the answer is 'not quite' then take note of these top tips from Stacey Sibley, creative director of interior designers Alexander James Interior Design, and also the proud owner of two Westies, Alfie and Piglet. Here, Stacey shares her expertise and eye for design to help you to transform your home into a 'purrfect' sanctuary for your four-legged friend:

1. Fur-Free Upholstery

Think carefully about the fabrics you choose to upholster and how likely they are to gather fur.

Avoid: Fabrics that are a magnet for pet hair e.g. velvet, mohair, corduroy, velour or chenille. Steer clear of any delicate materials that could be damaged by your adorable little friend e.g. silk.

Opt for: Smooth tapestries, leathers and synthetic fibres. Invest in quality textiles that will withstand the test of those claws!

2. Furniture - Not Toys

Beware of any exposed wood on your furniture - an excitable puppy may see it as their new favourite teething toy!

Avoid: Furniture with exposed wicker, rattan and sisal furniture.

Opt for: Metal and chrome will leave your would-be teether searching for another toy.

3. Squeaky Clean Flooring

In light of the inevitable rainy, muddy days and those early months when your puppy/kitten is still learning to toilet-train, we highly recommend flooring that is easy to clean.

Avoid: Hardwood floors that dent/scratch easily and require rapid cleaning should a puddle appear (hardwood floors stain very quickly)! If you are absolutely set for those beautiful wooden floors, then opt for harder woods e.g. mahogany or oak.

Opt for: Laminate flooring, stone or ceramic tiles. These also have the additional benefit of keeping your pets cooler during hotter weather.

4. The Ultimate Playzone

An all-important part of a pet's day is the need for space in the home to play.

Avoid: Letting your energetic little friend run riot around the whole house. They need to chase balls, roll excitedly around and play tug of war, but there are some areas of the house in which this is less desirable.

Opt for: Creating a designated 'play space' which your pet knows is suitable for play and where they can enjoy some quality 'me' time. Keep their toys stored neatly away and out of view but easily accessible.

5. Spotless Kitchens

Pet friendly interiors are all about keeping your space as tidy as possible, allowing that stunning new kitchen to glisten without unsightly doggy/kitty bowls smudging that perfect vision.

Avoid: Leaving food bowls out in plain sight.

Opt for: Sliding them underneath the toe kick of your kitchen cabinetry, bringing them out for food time, and slotting that water dish around a corner so your furry friends always have fresh water available.

6. Furry Walls

Don't overlook walls - they could become a headache to clean if you don't consider their texture.

Avoid: A highly-textured wall will attract pet fur, even if the little rascal isn't rubbing against it.

Opt for: Satin or a semi-gloss paint, helping to repel fur and to keep those walls glistening clean.

7. A Throne for a King/Queen

An essential part of pet friendly interior design must surely be the addition of their very own comfy pet bed.

Avoid: Mismatching with the rest of the room's decor i.e. don't place a traditional tartan pet bed into a swanky, sleek apartment, rather select a simpler, more contemporary design that will enhance the rest of your interiors.

Opt for: A pet bed made of high quality materials, creating a sumptuous space for them to relax, unwind and recharge after their busy day of play.

8. Mud Room Sanctuary

Imagine the scene: You've just been out on a fabulous walk, exploring the vast open fields and returning with wellies caked in mud and a pup that is full of it too. The door opens - the gateway to your beautiful home. And before you know it, your hound is through that entrance, drying off on the sides of your magnificent new sofa.

Avoid: Allowing this nightmare to happen.

Opt for: Install an entryway door to offer you an entrance space in which to dry off and wash down your doggy before they can enter the home. Store pet wipes, dog treats and other essentials in a cupboard at this entrance to keep the area harmoniously tidy.

9. Savvy Window Treatments

Every pet loves to peer out of the window to watch for their owners coming home and to bask in the sunshine on those sunny days.

Avoid: Thick fabric curtains - don't deprive them of their joy!

Opt for: Lightweight, sheer fabric curtains that will allow them to enjoy their view. If you have blinds, make sure you pull them up so the little darlings don't bring them down accidentally.

10. Harmony at Home

A pet friendly home must make special considerations for just how many accidents can happen around bushy tails and clumsy paws.

Avoid: Tables that sit too low - the candles, glasses and other breakables sitting atop may fall to their calamitous end if a tail wags too close.

Opt for: Carefully considering the space in your home and thinking about how you can avoid any unfortunate mishaps - after all pets aren't always aware of their surroundings and they don't mean to cause any trouble.
